Part 1

Part 1

Consists of a multiple choice test and video based hazard perception test.

I provide all training materials, books, software and hazard perception DVDs for the entire course. I also stage mock tests to help prepare and optional classes where I can guide you.

You have 1 hour and 30 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. Before the test starts you will get:

  • Instructions on how the test works.
  • The chance to do some practice questions to get used to the screens.

How the test works

There are 25 questions in each of these 4 categories:

  • Road procedure
  • Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
  • Driving test, disabilities, and the law
  • Publications and instructional techniques

A question and several possible answers appear on a screen. You have to select the correct answer.

You can finish the multiple-choice questions part when you’ve answered all of the questions. You don’t have to use the full 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Part 1 Cost £295

Part 2

Part 2

In this test, you will be required to demonstrate your driving ability in a one hour practical session.

The DVSA expects you to drive to a very high standard on various types of roads, in town, on country roads, on fast dual carriageways and on motorways.

Throughout the test you will also need to perform various manoeuvres that you will be teaching your learners.

As your instructor I will help you to develop your driving skills on your in car training sessions, improving your competency and confidence to meet the required standards. I will also conduct mock tests to help you prepare.

To pass the test you must be able to:

  • Drive safely in different road and traffic condition
  • Show that you know The Highway Code by the way you drive

Part 2 Cost £400 or £40 per hour

This is a practical course and you will be required to attend five two hour training sessions over four weeks.

Training is conducted in your own vehicle.

  • Training is conducted in your own vehicle.
  • 10 hours of one to one training.
  • Telephone Support.
  • Full debrief at end of each session.
  • Reflective log on way forward to improve your driving skills.
  • Why not blend part 2 with the ADI Part 1 training to ensure a faster learning experience.

Part 3

Part 3

This is a test of your instructional ability to teach others and lasts for approximately one hour.

The DVSA examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson to one of your pupils. You get to choose which pupil to take with you to the test.

The best way to prepare you for giving driving lessons is for you to spend time in the car doing just that, which is why I will recommend you start teaching people to drive whilst still in training. You can gain significant experience by doing so.

I know exactly what is required of you on the test and will help you practice delivering your lessons on the road, where you can correct mistakes and get used to the skills required to help and guide learners through our modern day traffic.

Part 3 Cost £1995 or £40 per hour

This is a practical course and you will be required to attend up to ten 4 hour training sessions.

  • 50 hours of one two one training taken in a maximum of 4 hour sessions.
  • Full debrief at end of each session.
  • Reflective log on way forward to improve your coaching skills.
  • This course can be taken over 3-18 weeks but can be adjusted to suit.

Need To Know For Your Test

You will need to attend with a pupil and will be observed teaching. You will pass if you achieve a minimum overall score of 31 [out of 51], and at least 8 out of 15 on the risk management section.

I recently qualified as a driving instructor with the help of Toby and would highly recommend his services. I found the following particularly helpful when completing each of the stages:

Part 1 – all of the study material was provided. Toby regularly phoned and/or messaged to check in and offer support.

  • Part 2 – after driving for 10 years and picking up many bad habits along the way, Toby was able to put these right during the 10 hours of in-car training and support and I passed my test with 0 minors.
  • Part 3 – after going in with the mindset that this was going to be as easy as part 2, I was in for a big reality check after the first in-car lesson, as Toby warned that it would be. Finding a balance between client centred learning and maintaining control over the risk proved to be a challenge, but over the course of the many hours of training received with Toby he was consistently there making sure that I was doing things the correct way, which helped me pass my part 3 in a relatively short timeframe (covid allowing).

He was always there for one-to-one support as and when I felt like I needed it to pick myself back up from the previous lesson that hadn’t gone so well in time for the next one.   His training is constructed in such a way that if you put the effort in then you should comfortably pass part 3 within a couple of months.
